Choose a hotel housekeeping cart by rooms per trip, not by appearance. For a 50-room boutique hotel, a compact cart serving four to six rooms is usually enough. A 100-room property often needs medium carts serving six to eight rooms, while a 200-room hotel benefits from several carts assigned by floor or zone rather than one oversized unit. Housekeeping carts carry clean linen, towels, amenities, waste bags and cleaning supplies. The useful capacity is the amount needed for one planned route. If a cart is too small, attendants return to the linen room too often. If it is too large, it becomes difficult to steer, blocks lifts and creates unnecessary weight.

Measure the Critical Footprint
Measure the narrowest corridor, lift entrance, fire door, housekeeping store door and turning point. Record both the cart body width and the widest point at the handles or wheels. A trolley that fits in a showroom may fail at a lift threshold or a service corridor turn.
- Width: prioritize the narrowest passage and lift door.
- Length: affects turning radius and storage bays.
- Height: affects visibility, shelf access and lift clearance.
- Handle projection: include it in the turning measurement.
- Wheel clearance: check skirting boards and door thresholds.

Choose the Shelf and Bag Layout
A housekeeping cart should separate clean items from used items. Open shelves are fast for replenishment but need side panels or covers when the cart travels through guest areas. A double-bag layout supports cleaner sorting of general waste and linen-related waste. Removable bags make end-of-shift handling easier because staff can move the bag directly to the laundry or waste room.

Match Capacity to Linen Weight
Do not specify capacity only in liters. Ask how many bath towels, hand towels, sheets, pillowcases and amenities the cart will carry. Wet or heavily loaded bags can create far more rolling resistance than dry folded linen. The frame, shelf joints and caster plates must be rated for the real working load, not an empty demonstration.
As a starting point, ask the supplier to confirm total safe load, safe load per shelf, bag volume, wheel diameter and braking configuration. If your route includes carpet, ramps or outdoor paving, specify those conditions in the same request.
Casters for Carpet, Tile and Marble
Wheel choice changes staff effort and noise. Larger wheels usually cross thresholds more easily, while non-marking polyurethane or thermoplastic rubber helps protect tile and polished floors. Two brakes are a practical minimum for a loaded housekeeping trolley. A four-swivel setup turns tightly; a two-swivel and two-fixed layout tracks more predictably down long corridors.
- Carpet: larger TPE or rubber wheels with smooth rolling.
- Tile: non-marking PU wheels and quiet bearings.
- Marble: soft non-marking wheels and at least two brakes.
- Ramps: larger diameter wheels and a stable handle position.
How Many Carts Does a Hotel Need?
Divide the daily room count by the rooms served per full run, then add a reserve for cleaning, maintenance and peak occupancy. A 100-room hotel does not necessarily need 100 carts. It may need 12 to 16 active carts distributed by floor, depending on the number of attendants and room turns. A smaller number of correctly sized carts is often easier to control than many undersized carts.
For resorts, use zones: guest floors, villas, spa, conference areas and public washrooms may require different configurations. This avoids carrying a heavy guest-room cart through spaces that need a smaller utility trolley.
