The bus box is one of the hardest-working items in a commercial kitchen. It carries soiled plates from the dining room, holds prep ingredients on the line, soaks sheet pans and chills bottles in ice baths. Most operators choose between moulded plastic and stainless steel. The right call depends less on the purchase price and more on weight, dishwasher wear, colour-coding rules and how often the box has to be replaced.

This guide compares the two materials for the same bus-box tasks. Plastic specs are based on the LSY 8312/8313/8316/8318 injection-moulded collection basins made by FOSHAN LSY Plastic in Foshan, China.
1. Weight and handling
A stainless steel bus box of the same capacity weighs roughly two to three times as much as a PP or HDPE basin. That matters when staff carry them full of plates or stack them shoulder-high in the dish pit. Moulded plastic basins keep wall thickness uniform and include moulded-in handles, so the load sits in the hand instead of cutting into it. For a 300-cover restaurant running three services a day, the weight difference shows up in prep speed and fatigue by the final seating.
2. Dishwasher and thermal cycling
Both materials are marketed as dishwasher safe, but they fail differently. Stainless tolerates heat and aggressive chemicals, yet it transfers heat instantly — a fresh-from-wash box can burn a server’s hand. Plastic PP basins handle repeated hot-fill and dishwasher cycles with less heat conduction, while HDPE stays tough through freezer-to-prep temperature swings. The LSY range uses food-grade PP/HDPE and is available with FDA or EU 10/2011 food-contact certification for the resin lot.

3. Colour coding and HACCP separation
Stainless steel is always silver. Plastic can be moulded in red, blue, green and white for raw meat, seafood, vegetables and ready-to-eat food. In a HACCP audit, moulded-in colour is a control; a coloured sticker on stainless is a finding. The LSY 8312/8313/8316 series is available in HACCP colours, so a kitchen can run the same model across every zone without mixing brands or footprints.
4. Damage and replacement cost
Stainless dents. Once a corner is creased, it stays creased and can snag gloves or scratch worktops. Plastic cracks at the rim or handle after years of rough handling. The replacement cost of a cracked plastic basin is typically lower than a dented stainless unit, and a kitchen can keep a small spare fleet in the same footprint because nested empties take less shelf space.

5. When to choose which
- Choose plastic when you need light weight, HACCP colour coding, nesting storage, lower replacement cost and freedom from heat transfer.
- Choose stainless when the box is exposed to open flame, very high-temp equipment or heavy abrasion from metal tools.
For most dish-room, prep-line and bussing tasks, moulded plastic basins are the lower-total-cost option. The full range is covered in our commercial food storage basins buying guide, including size-by-task tables and the HACCP audit checklist.
Order checklist
- Capacity tier: 10–20 L, 20–40 L or 40 L+
- Resin: HDPE for freezer/cold-prep duty, PP for hot-line and repeated dishwasher cycles
- Colour: moulded-in HACCP colours, not stickers
- Certification: FDA or EU 10/2011 for the resin lot
- Spare fleet: order 10–15% extras for swap-out during wash cycles
LSY Plastic moulds the 8312/8313/8316/8318 food-contact collection basins at the 20,000 m² Foshan factory on 180–2,500 ton injection presses. FAQ — plastic bus box vs stainless steel
Are plastic bus boxes dishwasher safe?
Yes. PP basins are preferred for repeated dishwasher cycles because they resist thermal warping. HDPE is better when basins move between freezer and prep. Both materials in the LSY range are food-contact grade and can be certified to FDA or EU 10/2011.
Can I get samples before ordering?
Samples are supplied at cost price so the buyer can verify fit, weight and wash behaviour. Domestic orders in China carry no minimum order quantity; overseas orders ship by full container load.
Does LSY make stainless steel bus boxes?
No. LSY specialises in injection-moulded PP/HDPE food-contact basins, including the 8312/8313/8316/8318 collection basin series. This guide compares plastic basins with stainless steel as an alternative material for the same kitchen task.
