OEM vs ODM Injection Molding: How to Choose a Partner

OEM vs ODM: The Same Factory, Two Very Different Projects

Both models are run on the same injection molding floor, but the responsibilities, costs and risks sit in different places. In an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) project, you bring the finished design — drawings, 3D files, material spec — and the factory builds exactly that. In an ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) project, you bring the requirement and the factory designs the part, validates the structure and proposes the tooling. Choosing wrongly is expensive: buyers who OEM a part they should have ODM’d pay for design iterations as tooling changes, and buyers who ODM something they already fully specified pay twice for engineering that already existed.

Who Owns the Mold — and Why It Decides Everything

Mold ownership is the single most important clause in an OEM contract:

  • OEM default: the buyer pays for and owns the tool. You can move it to another molder later, and piece prices exclude tooling amortization. Verify the contract states the mold is buyer property and can be retrieved on demand.
  • ODM default: the factory designs and owns the tool. Piece price is lower and upfront cost is smaller, but the design and tooling stay with the factory if you leave.
  • Hybrid: factory-designed part, buyer-owned tool — common when buyers want design help but insist on portability. Negotiate this explicitly.

Molds are precision assets with a finite service life. Whoever owns them should also budget for maintenance — see our injection mold lifespan and maintenance guide for realistic care cycles.

A Practical Decision Tree

  1. Do you have complete, validated drawings? Yes → OEM. No → continue.
  2. Is the part a standard product the factory already makes (pallets, turnover boxes, trays, service carts) with only size or color changes? Yes → ODM on an existing platform is fastest and cheapest.
  3. Does the part need structural engineering (load ratings, stack strength, wall thickness)? Let the factory’s CAE team optimize it — under-sized walls fail in the field and over-sized walls waste resin on every shot. Our wall thickness and rib design cost guide shows how much this matters.
  4. Is the product core to your brand IP? Yes → OEM with buyer-owned mold, regardless of cost.

What to Verify Before Signing with a Chinese Molder

  • Machine range vs your part size: LSY runs 180T to 2500T clamping force, covering small precision parts through large industrial products — a factory whose largest machine barely fits your part will quote higher and run slower.
  • In-house mold workshop: tooling made on-site shortens the design-to-T1 loop and makes revisions cheaper than outsourcing the steel.
  • Material capability: LSY processes PE, PP, PC, PET and PA, with material modification for demanding applications.
  • Process transparency: the project should run consultation → sample confirmation → mass production → delivery, with the sample approval gate in writing.
  • Track record in your product family: LSY has 35+ years of injection molding experience and supplies OEM programs for BYD, OPPO, vivo and Delice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you ship OEM/ODM products overseas? What is the MOQ?

Overseas orders ship by FCL (full container load) only. Container capacity depends on the product family — share your product list and destination port and we will confirm the loading plan. LCL and small batches are not supported for overseas customers. Domestic China orders have no MOQ.

How do samples work for OEM projects?

Samples are billed at cost price against a proforma invoice. For OEM projects, sample lead time follows sample confirmation after mold trial (T1) parts are approved. Air freight is paid by the buyer.

How is pricing structured between OEM and ODM?

Cost depends on product design, material selection (PE, PP, PC, PET, PA), mold complexity and order volume. In OEM the buyer typically owns the mold and amortizes tooling separately from piece price; in ODM the tooling is quoted into the program.
