Plastic Crates & Hotel Trolleys for Kenya Importers

Kenya imports plastic crates, pallets, waste bins and hotel equipment at scale, and the buying pattern is consistent: Nairobi distributors, Mombasa importers, hotel groups and agricultural produce exporters all buy full container loads from China. This guide covers what to specify for Kenyan conditions and how to check a factory before you pay.

What Kenyan buyers actually import

Search demand from Kenya clusters around five product families:

  • Plastic crates — the biggest line. Agriculture dominates: horticulture exports through Nairobi and Mombasa run ventilated crates for produce, and distribution businesses run solid crates for general goods. Ventilated versus solid is the first specification decision, and it is decided by what the crate carries.
  • Housekeeping trolleys — Nairobi’s hotel sector, from airport properties to safari lodges, replaces trolleys on a cycle. The specification questions are corridor width, floor surface and waste handling.
  • Waste bins and dustbins — facility management, county-style tenders and institutional buyers. Colour coding is usually specified by the buyer’s own scheme.
  • Platform trolleys — warehouses and distribution centres. Load rating and deck size dominate the specification.
  • Plastic pallets — export packing and cold chain. Static versus dynamic load rating is the question that separates comparable quotes.

Ventilated or solid crates: decided by the cargo

This is the most common specification mistake in the Kenyan crate market, so it is worth stating plainly:

  • Ventilated crates let air move and let water drain. They are essential for produce, for anything washed between uses, and for any cargo that generates condensation in transit. Horticulture crates are ventilated for a reason — trapped moisture is what destroys fresh produce value.
  • Solid crates are for small parts and for anything that must not leak or lose fine contents. They are also slightly stronger for the same weight, because the wall is uninterrupted.

Buyers who specify one type then discover they needed the other end up running both — which is fine, because both ship in the same container. Our guide to choosing industrial plastic crates covers the full decision set, and the stackable versus nestable comparison covers the freight dimension.

Hotel trolleys for Nairobi and coastal properties

Kenya’s hotel sector runs two distinct environments, and the trolley specification should follow the property:

  • Nairobi and highland properties — hard floors, dry corridors, standard wear. Painted steel frames are serviceable, though stainless still outlasts them.
  • Coastal Mombasa and Malindi properties — salt air and humidity attack plain steel hardware relentlessly. Specify corrosion-resistant axles, castor mounts and fasteners. The premium is small; the replacement cycle doubles.

The three specification questions that decide service life are floor surface, route width and waste handling. Write all three onto the purchase order rather than leaving them to conversation.

UV: the specification that quietly decides outdoor life

Equatorial UV is aggressive. Any plastic container standing outdoors — waste bins at collection points, crates staged in open yards, pallets in open-air storage — needs UV-stabilised compound, not a coating. Carbon black or HALS stabiliser through the whole wall section holds its properties for years; an unstabilised or coated part warps and cracks within one or two seasons.

Ask specifically for the UV grade on outdoor items. If a quote is unusually low for an outdoor application, this is usually the reason.

Shipping to Mombasa and Nairobi

Transit from South China ports to Mombasa typically runs about three to four weeks depending on the sailing and routing. Inland transport to Nairobi adds several days. Documentation is standard: commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading. Confirm HS classification with your clearing agent before the container ships, and ask the factory which code it declares on the invoice so both sides agree before arrival — a mismatch at Mombasa is a demurrage bill, not a phone call.

Container economics: the number that decides landed cost

Plastic goods are volume-limited. A 40HQ holds roughly 76 cubic metres, and whether that volume carries 400 units or 1,000 is the biggest variable in landed cost per piece — bigger than any negotiation on unit price. The ratio is decided by nesting:

  • Nested crates cut empty volume by 60–75% versus assembled units, multiplying container quantity.
  • Trolleys ship with frames and shelves nested or flat-packed.
  • Pallets barely nest — design differences swing container quantity by up to a third between similar-looking models.

Ask for a loading diagram for your specific models, in writing, before the deposit. Any supplier quoting container quantities without the nesting ratio is estimating.

How to check a supplier before you pay

  1. Part weight. Two crates with identical dimensions can differ by 40% in material. Weight is the honest specification and the fastest way to compare quotes.
  2. Recycled content in writing. Legitimate and often appropriate for general streams, but it changes impact strength. Unusually low quotes are usually explained by this.
  3. UV grade for outdoor items. Ask for the compound specification, not just the word “outdoor”.
  4. Machine list. A factory running 180T to 2500T machines in-house will answer specifically; a trading desk will not.
  5. FCL-only export. A factory consolidating loose cartons is running trading on the side, and your documentation chain gets longer.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum order for export to Kenya?

Export orders ship as full container loads (FCL). We do not consolidate loose cartons for overseas customers. Inside China we can ship smaller quantities with no minimum.

Can we mix crates, bins and trolleys in one container?

Yes, and most East African orders do exactly that. Send the mix and we will prepare a loading plan showing what fits.

Are ventilated crates available in food-grade material?

Yes. Confirm the grade at quotation stage if the crate is in direct contact with food — horticulture and produce applications should specify it explicitly.

Are samples available before a bulk order?

Yes. Samples are supplied at cost price plus freight, not free of charge. For large orders we usually recommend confirming specification from drawings and the loading plan first.

Can we have our own colour and logo?

Yes, subject to a minimum quantity per colour. Send a Pantone reference and vector artwork. In-mould branding carries a tooling cost; pad printing has a lower setup cost.

What is the production lead time?

Stock colours from existing moulds typically run a few weeks from deposit and artwork confirmation. Custom colour or new tooling adds time, confirmed in writing with the quotation.

Next step

Send the product types, quantities and destination port. We will reply with a specification sheet, the part weight, and a loading plan for the models that fit. If you are comparing suppliers, ask each for the part weight and the nesting ratio — those two answers separate quotes faster than anything else.
