If you are sourcing wheelie bins for a hotel group, a cleaning contractor or a municipality in the Gulf, the specification that works in a European catalogue often fails here. Surface temperatures,UV exposure, salt air and the way bins are actually handled on site all push the material and hardware in a different direction. This guide covers what UAE, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain and Kuwait buyers typically put on a purchase order, and what drives the FOB number.
What GCC buyers actually specify
Two capacities dominate commercial and municipal tenders across the Gulf: 120 litres for guest floors, back-of-house corridors and small recycling points, and 240 litres for central waste rooms, loading docks and municipal collection routes. A smaller volume of 1100 litre four-wheel containers is ordered for bulk collection points, usually alongside the 240L units rather than instead of them.
Beyond capacity, three variables decide whether a container is accepted on site:
- Colour — tied to the waste stream, not to brand preference. Most GCC facilities follow a green / blue / red / black scheme for general, recyclable, hazardous and organic streams, but individual municipalities publish their own variants. Confirm the local scheme before the order is placed, because re-colouring a container after moulding is not possible.
- Wheel configuration — two wheels for 120L and 240L on flat surfaces; four wheels with a swivel pair where the bin is pushed through ramps, kerbs or tight service corridors.
- Lid type — flat lid, domed lid, or pedal-operated. Pedal bins are common in hotel guest areas and food service, where guests should not touch the lid.
Why a standard bin fails in Gulf heat
The single most common failure we see in returned Gulf orders is not a manufacturing defect — it is a material grade that was never specified. Between June and September, a dark-coloured bin standing in direct sun can reach a surface temperature well above 60°C. Under that load, unstabilised HDPE loses impact strength, the lid warps, and the rim cracks within one or two seasons.
Three things prevent it:
- UV stabilisation in the compound, not a coating. A properly specified outdoor grade carries carbon black or a hindered amine light stabiliser (HALS) through the whole wall section. A painted or sprayed surface scuffs off in a few months.
- Wall thickness at the rim and hinge. These are the two points that take the load every time the bin is tipped. A wall that is thick enough at the base but thin at the hinge will crack there first.
- Corrosion-resistant axle hardware. Coastal humidity attacks plain steel axles and zinc-plated fittings. Stainless or fully enclosed axle assemblies are worth the small cost difference on a project that is expected to run five years.
Specifications that belong on the purchase order
| Parameter | 120L | 240L | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nominal capacity | 120 L | 240 L | Check usable volume, not just nominal |
| Body material | HDPE, UV stabilised | HDPE, UV stabilised | Ask for the grade, not just “HDPE” |
| Wheel diameter | 200 mm typical | 200–250 mm | Larger wheels roll better on kerbs |
| Static load rating | 50–60 kg | 100–120 kg | State it as a test condition |
| Nesting | Nests when empty | Nests when empty | Nesting ratio drives container loading |
| Lid | Hinged, replaceable | Hinged, replaceable | Ask whether lids ship separately |
Two details are routinely left off the sheet and then cause disputes on arrival: the colour reference (a RAL or Pantone number, not “green”) and the wheel type (solid rubber versus PU). Write both down.
Container loading: how many bins fit in a 40HQ
Container loading is driven almost entirely by the nesting ratio, and the nesting ratio changes with wall taper. A 240L bin that nests three into one occupies roughly one third of the volume of a single un-nested unit, so the practical loading figure is far higher than a simple volume calculation suggests.
Because the ratio varies by mould design, the reliable method is to ask for a loading diagram for the specific model rather than a generic figure. Any supplier quoting container quantities without knowing the nesting ratio is estimating. For a full container order, request the loading plan in writing before the deposit — it is the difference between a profitable landed cost and a container that ships half empty.
What drives the FOB price
Buyers often compare quotes on price per unit without checking that the quotes describe the same product. Five variables account for most of the spread:
- Virgin versus recycled resin. Recycled content lowers the price and is acceptable for many municipal streams, but impact strength drops. Ask for the recycled percentage if it is quoted.
- Wall thickness and part weight. A bin that weighs 9 kg and one that weighs 12 kg are not the same product, even at the same nominal size.
- UV package. A properly stabilised outdoor grade costs more than a standard indoor grade. If a quote is unusually low for an outdoor application, this is usually why.
- Wheel and axle grade. Standard versus stainless versus enclosed castors.
- Colour and branding. Custom colours carry a minimum order quantity per colour; in-mould logos carry a tooling cost.
Shipping to Jebel Ali, Hamad and Sohar
For Gulf destinations we ship full container loads from South China ports. Transit to Jebel Ali typically runs about 18 to 25 days depending on the sailing and the carrier; Hamad and Sohar are broadly similar with a possible transhipment. Documentation is standard: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, and a certificate of origin where the destination requires it for duty purposes.
We ship FCL for export orders rather than loose cartons. Part-container shipments of bulky plastic goods rarely justify the freight, and mixed loads complicate customs clearance at destination.
Frequently asked questions
What size waste bin do hotels in Dubai typically use?
Guest floors and corridors usually run 120L two-wheel bins, while central waste rooms and back-of-house use 240L. Food service areas and guest-facing points often use smaller pedal bins so guests do not touch the lid.
Do you supply to the UAE and other GCC countries?
Yes. We ship full container loads to Jebel Ali, Hamad, Sohar and other Gulf ports, and we can quote FOB or discuss delivery terms depending on the order size.
What is the minimum order for export?
Export orders ship as full container loads (FCL). We do not consolidate loose cartons for overseas customers. For orders inside China we can ship smaller quantities by courier or truck with no minimum order quantity.
Can the bins be made in a specific colour?
Yes, subject to a minimum quantity per colour. Send us the RAL or Pantone reference and we will confirm the moulding minimum before you commit.
Are samples available?
Yes. Samples are supplied at cost price plus freight, not free of charge. The sample cost is not normally credited against a later bulk order, so we recommend confirming the specification from drawings and the loading plan first if the order is large.
What is the production lead time?
Standard colours from existing moulds typically run a few weeks from deposit and artwork confirmation. Custom colours and new tooling add time — we confirm the schedule in writing with the quotation.
Next step
Send us the capacity, colour reference, wheel type and target quantity, and we will come back with a specification sheet and a loading plan for the model that fits. If you are comparing suppliers, the fastest way to find the real difference is to ask each one for the part weight and the UV grade — the answers separate the quotes quickly.
